NeoReader User Guide

Help for NeoReader 0.67.1 on Ubuntu and macOS. Use the sections below to install NeoReader, work with PDFs, activate Pro features and solve common problems.

1. Install and start

Ubuntu

  1. Install NeoReader-0.67.1-Linux-x86_64.deb.
  2. Start NeoReader from the application menu.
  3. Open Help → About and confirm Version 0.67.1.
  4. Open Help → Components. qpdf, OpenSSL, Tesseract, OCR data and the licence trust key should be Available. LibreOffice is optional.
  5. Quit with Ctrl+Q and launch again.

macOS

  1. Open NeoReader-0.67.1-macOS-universal.dmg in Finder.
  2. Drag NeoReader to Applications and launch that copy.
  3. About must show Version 0.67.1.
  4. Quit with Command-Q and relaunch from Applications or Launchpad.

2. Free and Pro

A new installation starts as Free and Unlicensed. Help → License & Edition shows the current edition, SKU, device ID and validity.

  1. Use Offline Activation → Request Licence to create a device-bound .neoreader-request file.
  2. Submit it through the Request Licence page.
  3. When NeoReader supplies the signed .neoreader-license file, import it through Offline Activation.
  4. A licence issued for another device is rejected.

Free keeps reading and basic markup available. Pro enables the commercial workflow used for OCR, redaction, watermark, compare, forms and annotated export.

3. Open, read and move

  1. Use File → Open PDF.
  2. Use Previous, Next or page thumbnails to navigate.
  3. Zoom in or out. At high zoom, use the Hand tool to pan.
  4. Rotate pages when required. Digital text remains selectable on supported source-preserving paths.
  5. Find searches digital text and selecting a result jumps to its page.

Password-protected PDFs are not supported in this release. A corrupt or truncated PDF is rejected without replacing the document already open.

4. Mark up a page

NeoReader markup is an overlay. The source PDF is not directly overwritten.

5. Export an annotated PDF

  1. Choose File → Export Annotated PDF. This requires Pro.
  2. Save to a new filename.
  3. Reopen the exported PDF and verify the annotations.
  4. The original source file remains unchanged.

Do not use annotated export on a signed PDF if the embedded signature must remain intact. Keep the signed original.

6. Forms

With Pro, enter field values, export/import XFDF when needed, and use Export Annotated PDF when the completed values must be preserved in a new PDF.

7. Redaction

  1. Select Redaction in Pro and cover the text that must be removed.
  2. Export the redacted PDF.
  3. Use Extract Text on the exported copy to confirm the covered sentence is absent while unaffected text remains.

Redaction is not the same as placing a black pen stroke over text.

8. Sign and verify

  1. Choose the embedded PDF signing command.
  2. Select the PKCS#12 certificate and enter its password.
  3. Set a reason and save a new PDF.
  4. Use Verify Embedded PDF Signature on the signed copy.

9. Create and convert PDFs

10. OCR a scan

  1. If starting from images, first use Images to PDF.
  2. Choose File → OCR Scanned Pages.
  3. For the tested build, use English (eng).
  4. Wait for recognition to finish.
  5. Export the annotated/searchable PDF and reopen it.
  6. Find and Extract Text should then work on recognized content.

11. Watermark, print and compare

NeoReader can apply a watermark to an exported copy, print or save through the system print workflow, and compare two documents while keeping the primary document available afterward.
